NEVILLE JULES
PROFILE
Neville Jules is one of the most important persons in the history of the steelpan movement. Neville is one of a small class of outstanding individuals who has served the steelpan movement as founder, leader, tuner, and arranger. In Trinidad All Stars, Neville founded arguably the greatest steel orchestra in history, infusing a sense of discipline and musical excellence that are the hallmarks of the institution to this day. Individually, Neville has been the inventor of several of the instruments in the modern steel orchestra. To his credit, championship blood still flows in his veins as his arrangement of ‘Mas Que Nada’ was adjudged joint winner of the 2004 edition of Pan in the 21st Century, beating submissions by several more celebrated arrangers – at the age of 77 years old!

Notes
- Jules was the first to arrange classical selections set to calypso tempo on carnival days. He would have the members of All Stars learn the selections with their finger tips only, so not even the players knew what piece they were learning. On J’ouvert morning, he would give the call for the individual selections to be played, thus unleashing these musical ‘bombs’ on the joyous public.
- Pan Trinbago has honoured this unique achievement by naming its annual J’ouvert morning steelpan competition the ‘Neville Jules Bomb contest’
